Joined-up support for the family

Early child and family support is an easy phrase to say but not so easy to do. This is because the child has one set of needs while the family has another. A practitioner who is skilled in helping a child might be lost when it comes to helping the family with the challenges thay are facing. Also, he or she might have no training in family support.

One clear difference between the two sets of needs is that the child needs support in acquiring new understanding ans skills and might be experiencing pain and discomfort in the daily routines while parents and other family members are likely to be confused, fearful, stressed and exhausted. Two different sets of needs, each needing early support practitioners with trained competence. Training must include promoting quality of life for the child and the family.
